Carnegie Library
The eiNetwork and FarStone Technology, Powering the Libraries of Allegheny County.
The eiNetwork is the regional asset that furthers the mission of libraries by providing the information infrastructure to the libraries of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. eiNetwork is the provider of all technology for public libraries in the region, servicing over 80 sites. Housed in the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, eiNetwork has implemented Far Stone Technology's Virtual Drive software at many of their sites and according to Andrea Clarkson, Customer Support Manager, "We just love it."
Around Allegheny County are 1,700 PCs in 82 sites that are maintained by The eiNetworks. The libraries use many different types of computers ranging from early generation 486s to Pentium IIIs. The operating systems are primarily WIN 98 or NT. Their biggest use for Virtual Drive was with children's CDs. Prior to using Virtual Drive, when a child needed to run a program on a CD, a library assistant would have to load the CD for the them. When the child was finished, the library assistant would be interrupted again to retrieve the CD from the computer. With Virtual Drive, that is no longer necessary. Now, anyone can access the program they want simply by clicking on the appropriate icon. The program they wish to run is virtually inserted. Because no disks need to be physically inserted, the patron doesn't need an assistant to come over and help them. "The user can load and unload the program by themselves." says Ms Clarkson.
According to Ms. Clarkson, the use of "Virtual Drive makes the programs run faster and smoother." Since you are now accessing the program from the hard drive instead of the CD, your speed increases to almost 200X versus a normal CD drive speed of about 32X. Asked if Ms. Clarkson liked the program, she responded, "We'd like to put it in all of the libraries when we have the budget."
Education
Mr. Ong, Po-Yai Elementary School
Virtual Class Usage in School. Previously used LanStar 2000, but the performance was not as good. After evaluating FarStone's Virtual Class, the school decided to switch to their programs to Virtual Class for its superior functions and stability. Po-Yai's Computer classroom is equipped with 40 Pentium computers. After 4-5 months of running Virtual Class the school has reported zero complaints and has seen an improvement in their students grades.
Ms. Lin, Hu Sheng School Virtual Drive Usage In School
The Hu Sheng School has 8 divisions focused on language and natural science. They have found Virtual Drive easy to install and operate. They found it simple to create multiple file CDs, under WIN, in a very stable format. Mr. Su, Feng Chia University Virtual Class Usage in School In a classroom setting, traditional chalkboard use is no longer viewed as an effective teaching method. Virtual Class provides a much more effective method for a professor to reach his or her students. Virtual Class is perfect in a classroom, no wires or special add-on cards are required and all at an affordable cost. Feng Chia University has more than 1,000 computers on campus, mostly equipped with WIN NT 4.0 WorkStation and has found Virtual Class easy to install, easy to operate and very stable.
Home User
I found a copy of Virtual Drive on a CD-ROM including Norton's AntiVirus when I was on assignment in Papua New Guinea in 1999. I immediately saw the potential for the product as we were using a number of reference CD-ROM's and encyclopedias at home. I loaded the trial application on my home PC and used a friend's computer to purchase the authorization key over the Net using my credit card to upgrade to the full version. At present I have 8 file CD-ROM drives on my home PC which saves time, particularly with multi-disk encyclopedias like Britannica. The most popular CD-ROM games my children use also work well and are convenient and quiet in operation when compared to the noise a CD-ROM drive makes. I demonstrated the software to our Department head as a way around the problem of information management, particularly service manuals, which are increasingly being syndicated on CD-ROM. This is what led to the original interest in your product. My view is. with the massive increase in affordable hard drive capacities now available on home PC's the time is right for marketing your product in Australia, particularly to schools. One simple example of the convenience this product allows is one I have used when traveling the PNG and Pacific Island Countries. I have purchased the White Pages telephone directory for Australia, which is a CD-ROM about 560MB in size. When loaded into a Virtual Drive on a laptop there is an instant reference should I need to obtain a phone number. Equipment servicemen could use your product in a similar manner for on site reference to manuals and parts lists.

Rico Mariani, Microsoft January 18, 2001
My main use for it is to protect the original CD's for learning programs for my kids. They used to scratch the disks to the point of uselessness very quickly.. so instead I keep the originals now and I put whatever program they want on their computer until they don't want it anymore. The kids can have many games installed on the same computer with no risk of destruction. I have probably saved several hundred dollars because I didn't have to buy replacements.
Best regards,
Rico

Thanks for the follow up Kevin. I have not used the software much, but it is fantastic. I have a 4 year old son whom I do not trust with my CD's - so his computer has all the stuff that needs the CD to be inserted etc on Virtual Drives instead. I have yet to try it on my laptop, but may do sometime. I needed it when I didn't have it, but for now its a must have "in case". Perhaps later in the year I might upgrade.

Mike
P. Harris, Advent Systems Inc. January 17, 2001
I AM VERY PLEASED! This (to me) is the greatest thing since sliced bread. I have gone through a literally backed up all my CD software to Virtual Drive. I create a Virtual Drive file then write multiple files out to one backup CD ROM (when possible). What's neat is that when my software calls for a CD and I've deleted the Virtual Drive file I just use the backed up VD CD to satisfy the software request. I have encouraged as many others as I could to also buy the software, it is great and I would be glad to share this opinion with anyone. I have a 6.4GB Drive with nothing but VD files on it.
LOVE YOUR PRODUCT!

Roger Williams January 22, 2001 Hi Kevin;
Your software is very robust, and I would like the upgrade as the only changes I would recommend appear to be in your new version 6.1.
Thanks,
Roger O. Williams
