This program lets you solve a crossword puzzle
generated using your current word list. The program will try to fit as many
randomly-selected words (maximum of 15) from your list as possible into the
puzzle. Be aware, however, that sometimes certain words may not fit in the puzzle
and sometimes, especially with short words, the puzzle may be small. Medium
length words of 5 to 9 letters seem to work best. Clicking New may generate
a larger puzzle. You can solve the puzzle on the computer screen or print it
for later use. The program is run by selecting Cross Words from the main menu
screen. You can redo this exercise (each time with a different puzzle) until
you click Exit. Clicking Help or pressing
will bring up this screen of
information.
When you start the program, the crossword puzzle
will be shown along with the words to put in the puzzle. The only “clues” used
in this crossword puzzle are word length and the letters where words cross.
To fill in a word in the puzzle, use the mouse to click on the location of the
first letter, then type in the missing letters of the word. A question mark
indicates the position of the requested letter. Note you don’t need to type
letters that are already displayed in the puzzle. And, note if the first letter
of the word you are typing is already there, you must still click on that first
letter to start typing the remainder of the word. If the typed word is correct,
a tune will play and the corresponding word will be highlighted in the word
list. If incorrect, an ‘uh-oh’ is heard and the word is removed from the puzzle.
To clear a word before you are finished typing it, either use the Backspace
key or just click on the first letter of another word. The game is over when
you have filled in all the words in the puzzle. If you have trouble solving
the puzzle, you can click on a word in the list to have the computer fill in
a word or click Stop to stop the game. When you click Stop or the game is over,
you can click New to create a new crossword puzzle or click Exit to leave Cross
Words.
If you want a hard-copy of the currently displayed
crossword puzzle (with all words blanked out), click Print Puzzle. Make sure
your printer is on-line and ready.
Mixed Case Lists: The Cross Words game converts
all words in the word list to upper case, regardless of how the list is stored.
Hence, Cross Words is case-insensitive.
