What The Experts Say About Read, Write & Type!™

"We have been using Read, Write & Type!™ to support small group instruction in reading for first grade children who are identified as at risk for reading failure. This project is being conducted with support from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. With its emphasis on phonological awareness, letter-sound knowledge and phonetic decoding in reading and spelling, Read, Write & Type!™ is entirely consistent with recent discoveries that underline the importance of these skills to the growth of good reading ability."

"Read, Write & Type!™ is an excellent example of the very best in computer applications to provide support for children learning to read. The program not only incorporates the most important principles of beginning reading instruction, but it has also brought them together in a package that is very engaging for children. The great strength of Read, Write & Type!™ is that it provides explicit and systematic instruction in reading and spelling strategies in the context of meaningful and engaging writing and reading activities."

Joseph Torgesen, Ph.D.
Distinguished Research Professor
of Psychology and Education,
Florida State University, Tallahassee, FL

"Among all the commercially available computer software claiming to offer reading instruction, we like Read, Write and Type!™ the best."

Florida State University Study: In a study conducted at Florida State University, a group of first graders who were identified as at-risk for reading failure were evaluated over a 2-year period in a program using Read, Write & Type!™. The children showed large gains in reading skills from pre to post-tests, with very large gains in fluency and accuracy. Reading comprehension scores were also higher than expected based on the children's general verbal ability.

Millard School Study: In a classroom study conducted at Millard School in Fremont, California, 94 first graders received instruction using Read, Write & Type!™ in two 1-hour sessions per week for a seven month period. The performance of these children was compared to that of 50 first graders from a comparable elementary school who started with higher reading levels than the students from Millard School. The Millard School children achieved significantly higher end of year scores on phoneme blending, reading nonwords, and spelling.

Family Literacy Project: The Family Literacy Project, funded by the Knight Foundation, informally explored Read, Write & Type!'s effectiveness with children and adults learning English as a second language. First and second graders used their new RWT!™ skills to help an adult family member learn English. A group of Vietnamese families and a group of Hispanic families participated for two nights a week in four 6-week sessions. This project was not designed to collect formal data, but both the adults and children found it very enjoyable and there were waiting lists for each session.

"The graphics are smooth and impressive, the sounds and voices are perfect, and this is, without a doubt, the absolute best program for integrating reading, writing and typing I've ever seen."

Mike Madson,
Computer Bits,
Colorado Springs, Colorado

"The carefully sequenced presentation of phonemes lets children quickly learn to blend sounds to form words and type complete sentences. The clever animations, engaging games, and well-defined, clear, achievable goals and rewards will keep kids coming back for more."

Donna Cazet,
Technology & Learning Magazine

"In the Age of Computers, reading and writing have been joined by typing as the basic skills necessary for literary communications. Read, Write & Type!™ should be called Read, Write & Type!™ AND Entertain. This program has it all."

Barry Brenesal, PC Magazine

What Teachers Say About Read, Write & Type!™

"First-grade reading is a high priority for us. Many children need a lot of practice with phonics. Bringing Read, Write & Type!™ into the classroom was a perfect solution."

Cheryl Grinager, Principal, Millard School, Fremont, California

"This is the first program I've seen that integrates learning phonics with learning the keyboard. I'm truly convinced of the advantages of using computers to round out the elementary reading and writing curriculum."

Debra Brown, Teacher, Pine Grove, California

"It's amazing. Their little fingers can do it and they seem to enjoy it. At the end of first grade, 95% of the children can keyboard correctly and we've reviewed phonics."

Jane Croom, Program Aide, Springer Elementary, Los Altos, California

What Parents Say About Read, Write & Type!™

"I wanted to let you know how much my 5-year-old son, Woody, is enjoying Read, Write & Type!™. I can't get him off the computer! He is working for long periods of time--in fact over the last week he has completed levels 1 through 9. I am amazed at what he can do already. He is using all the correct fingers and audibly sounding out the words as he types them. I am extremely impressed with this program."

Sara Martin, Modesto, California

"My son was using a very expensive computer program at school, which, although good, was very boring and non-rewarding on a 6-year-old level. I would have to sit and fight constantly for his attention. The new Read, Write & Type!™ program not only helps him, it is fun, and he is asking on a regular basis to do one more letter. Thank you for gaining the interest of my son--and I am sure many children are like him--and for helping me teach him."

LaRae L. Johnson, Vancouver, British Columbia
